The Data Science Education Center (DSEC) is dedicated to transforming K16 education – with a focus on K12 – by cultivating a dynamic learning environment focused on data literacy, computational thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
We develop standards-aligned curricula, create tools for Participatory Sensing, and provide professional development that enhances teachers’ capabilities and improves student outcomes in mathematics and the sciences.
Our mission extends to advocating for policy changes and promoting nationwide dissemination of innovative educational practices to ensure that every student is prepared for success in a data-driven world.
Our Vision: Fostering Future Innovators through Data-Driven Education
Introduction to Data Science (IDS)
Introduction to Data Science (IDS) is the leading high school data science curriculum and a product of the DSEC. It was designed to equip students with essential skills in data reasoning and critical thinking across diverse data formats. Aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for High School Statistics and Probability and the American Statistical Association’s Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education. IDS also addresses the data acumen crucial for responsible citizenship in the 21st century.

IDS is a rigorous course for students who aspire to:
- Enhance their quantitative aptitude.
- Prepare for Advanced Placement (AP) Statistics.
- Access burgeoning fields such as Computational Data Analysis.
- Engage deeply with math, statistics, and computational thinking through inquiry-based instruction focused on real-world challenges.
IDS equips students with the indispensable tools, techniques, and principles needed to navigate and make sense of our data-rich world.
